ESD-J's Activities

International networking (Team responsible: International Network Project Team)

ESD-J provides an international contact point for the DESD, working to build NGO networks, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, and to encourage international cooperation.

• Maintenance of English-language website
  We arrange for reports on developments in Japan to be translated into English and disseminated overseas via our website.
  
  
• Production of pamphlets in other languages
  We produce pamphlets in various languages with the aim of informing people overseas of developments in Japan and pushing for greater networking in the lead up to DESD.

• Hosting of networking workshops at international conferences
  We hold workshops, etc. at DESD-related international conferences as a means of fostering networking.
  
  
• Organization of lecture meetings and workshops with overseas guests
  We invite guests from overseas to participate in lecture meetings, workshops, etc. on topics related to ESD.

National networking and support for exchanges (Team responsible: Regional Network Project Team)

• Regional meetings
  ESD-J promotes the holding of regional ESD meetings as a means of fostering the spread of DESD initiatives throughout the country.
  
  
• Regional exchange workshops
  We hold regional ESD exchange workshops as a means of strengthening mutual support networks for the promotion of ESD in each regional block (Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku, Kanto, Tokai, Kansai, Chugoku/Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa).
  
  
• National meetings
  EDS-J holds national ESD meetings to promote the building of nationwide networks of people involved in DESD. (Once a year)
  
  

Information gathering/sharing and publication (Team responsible: Communication Project Team)

• Website operation
  We provide up-to-date information on ESD and DESD via our website.
  
  
• Publication of "ESD Reports", a booklet containing information on ESD
  This quarterly report (in Japanese) is aimed at NGO/NPOs and individuals involved in ESD-related activities in Japan and contains articles on their undertakings and the activities of governments and UN organizations, etc. in relation to ESD, all organized according to subject.
  
  
• Publication of annual reports on ESD-J activities
  Once a year we publish a report (in Japanese) containing ESD-related information and details of ESD-J's activities.

Training and promulgation/education (Organization responsible: Secretariat)

• Implementation of lecture meetings and workshops around the country
  We arrange for speakers and facilitators to attend workshops, courses, etc. on ESD in response to requests from groups in the regions.

Research and policy advocacy (Team responsible: Policy Advocacy Team)

• Preparation of NGO proposal for the implementation of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) in Japan
  In the lead up to the creation of a Japanese implementation scheme for DESD, ESD-J will promote research and hold workshops with the aim of putting together an NGO draft proposal.
  
  
• Working to ensure the national DESD scheme reflect the NGO proposal
  We work to ensure that the Japanese DESD implementation scheme reflects the opinions of NGOs and citizens.
  
  
• Lobbying for the establishment of a national roundtable
  We urge the government to put together a scheme for implementing DESD in Japan and set up a roundtable as a forum for discussion and debate with NGOs.
  
  
• Implementation of research in relation to DESD
  We carry out research into DESD.

Working with companies and government

• Working with companies and government to create frameworks for the promotion of ESD
  We cooperate actively with companies and government to build and strengthen frameworks to ensure that ESD takes root and grows both throughout Japan and overseas.
