From Bangkok to Rio, Rio to Nagoya/Okayama - Strategic Meeting for the establishment of Asia NGO Network on ESD <12/04/03>

The Japan Council on the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD-J) co-organised a strategic workshop for the establishment of Asia NGO Network on ESD (ANNE), from 10-11 March, 2012, Bangkok, with United Nations Environment Programme Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP RRC.AP).

Based on our experience gained from Asia Good ESD Practice Project (AGEPP: 2006-08), 7 NGOs from AGEPP Network has discussed the possibility and significance of the NGO network. At Surabaya Workshop in 2010, these NGOs agreed the establishment of the NGO network by 2014, which is the final year of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD). And now in Bangkok, we developed our plan further - made the roadmap towards, clarified the shared responsibility of member NGOs, as well as complied the message to Rio+20 held in June, 2012.

All the handout documents and the workshop proceedings are downloadable from the below. The proceedings report contains the summary of the discussion at the workshop, our roadmap towards 2014, and ANNE message to Rio+20.

ESD-J is also planning to hold the side event at Rio+20 for presenting the significant role of NGOs in ESD, in particular, the local community empowerment for sustainable development.
